Everybody loves to hate the "Design Art" phenomenon (The Limited Editions of furniture that sells for scandalous prices at auctions) but despite the criticism (most of them saying that it enables the auction houses to sell "art" furniture for a lot higher prices then if it was called design or "decorative arts") it seems like designers and collectors interest in design-art is increasing.
In London design Festival on September I attended a conference about design art in which the designer Arik Levy was saying that the division between design and art is something that only
Magazines creates. It doesn't really exist and it never did, "Picasso made ceramic plates and Giacometti made a chandelier", he said.
Design Miami that will be held in the Miami Design district from 3-6 December is the international fair for limited edition design. This year the fair commissioned for the first time a new temporary structure to house the main body of the show. The beautiful 4000 meter structure was designed by New York Architects Aranda/lash.
In recent years design Miami was staged in historical buildings, so it seems like the new building is a statement about the future of design, not about the past. The Main sponsor of the fair is Swarovski Crystal Palace and it will bring a new work of designer Ross Lovegrove.Lovegrove designed a table and Chandelier entitled Liquid Space. The Chandelier looks like it melted and it delievers three dimensional light above and below the tables. The Chandelier and the tables are part of limited editions series.Maybe we cannot afford buying them but we can still watch and enjoy, cannot we?
