Maison & Objet Sep. 2008

October 2, 2008 05:01 by shelly

As the third and final chapter in Erayo's Paris trade shows review, we give you the Maison & Objet 2008.

The Maison & Objet is one of the major design shows taking place twice a year gathering all the great global design news. Although it is mainly showcasing interiors, home decorations and product design, there is a growing number of designers from the jewelry world, fashion and kids products presenting new materials, technologies and inspirations.

The Maison & Objet is spread over 7 halls divided into categories, while hall 3, called "NOW", is the most interesting and innovated. NOW is showcasing fresh new emerging designers alongside more established brands. Some of the brands we love from the show: Normann- Copenhagen, Domestic, Undergrowth UK and Neo Design

Erayo's talent locator team brings you some noticeable recurring trends:

  1. Surrealism. This trend was seen in the former Maiosn & Objet exhibit and is spreading. (read more on the trends in 2007 Maison & Objet > http://www.erayo.com/BlogTrends/post/2008/03/Fantastical-absurd-world.aspx)
  2. Eco-chic. Ecologic phenomenon getting stronger and turning into main stream while grabbing all designers and focusing on simplifying things, making design valued and essential.  ( read more on the Ecological trend seen in 2007 Maison & Objet > http://www.erayo.com/BlogTrends/post/2008/03/Hairy-Chair.aspx)
  3. Good, "fine" design is no longer monochromatic and minimalistic; it doesn’t immediately mean black, white and shades of grey. Common design is getting wilder and fearless. Popular global designers are letting themselves use wild combinations of colors and forms in all fields of home decorations: table ware, furniture, wall décor and textile:  A statement piece.

Premiere Classe - Paris

September 17, 2008 04:08 by shelly

Erayo's talent locator team scoured the major shows in Paris last week (4-9 September) and for all of you that weren’t there, here is a focused review and a short video of Premiere Classe.

Premiere Classe is a fashion and accessories show presenting fresh and talented designers alongside worldwide known brands.

The show took place in Paris at "who’s next". The main hall was divided into six big areas: Face, Fast (for street codes) Fame, Fresh and Private.

This year the show focused on three countries: Canada, Japan, Malaysia which showcased young emerging designers.

Premiere Classe is known for the young creative designers, new and avant-garde talents full of fun and vibe atmosphere. One can feel the upcoming trends and news for the next year while strolling along the designs.

There were constant motifs seen in the show: bigger accessories: watches, belts, necklaces – bigger and bolder. The "statement" trend was in a total contrast to the clothes chic that seems to be minimalistic and simple-look.

There was also a repeated use of ready-made: parts of antique clocks, zippers and springs.

In contrast to the industrial look and the common use of plastics and vibrant colors, there was a comeback to the vintage and grandma's closet.

Designers have put a lot of efforts and thoughts into the design of their stands, and even small designers have created successfully an inspirational stand.

Men's Trends

August 14, 2008 05:28 by shelly

The world of fashion is well aware that men have their own say nowadays. It is a growing phenomenon that covers all aspects in a man’s life. The apartments of single men are as aesthetic as those of the single women, men are familiar with design icons, appreciate hair styles, sunglasses and shopping. Therefore, men have been receiving more attention in the fashion industry, which has led to an increase in the variety of fashionable items that they can choose from. Designers all throughout the world are now becoming more attentive and responsive to this potential growing market.

Gal Barash, Kimberley Selwood

Although cufflinks have been men's private territory for ages, designers are now offering their own cufflinks interpretation and giving them the full respect they deserve for surviving such hard times in the jewelry world.

Tamara Gomez, Missbibi, Tatty Devine

From the "Bling Bling" trend to the Livestrong wrist band and so on, it was only a matter of time before men got used to wearing jewelry and even loving it. Men can choose their own kind of jewelry, accessories, handbags, hats and their own general style. They have a lot to choose from that will fit their personal taste:  from the ongoing Geek Chic, the Gothic look and Jeans & t.

 OR Design, Kimberley Selwood

Handbag designers and manufactures are also giving full attention to these design-oriented consumers: practical laptop bags and versatile fashionable handbags that will fit every guy's look and purpose.

Designing Kids Room

July 31, 2008 06:08 by shelly

When it comes to colors and trends, kids aren't so different from adults. When an adult is designing his bedroom, he wants to create a relaxing and personal atmosphere that will always make him feel at home. So does a kid.

When decorating a newborn's rooms, it is known that it is recommended to use very relaxed, pastel, neutral colors, in order to create a calming environment and a peaceful atmosphere. But as the little ones grow up, they are on a constant search for stimulating colors, shapes and icons. They are forming their personality and creating their little world from the things they like the most.

A child's room is the only place at home that belongs to them alone – it is their little kingdom; it's where they play, read, listen to music, day-dream, go to sleep and wake up in the morning. The room should create an atmosphere that will make the child feel happy and safe. It should be designed according to the child's fantasies and his personality - let your child be a part of the room's design and decoration.

Shelley Mason, Kideko's owner, started Kideko out of the frustration of being unable to find stylish decorating options for kids. She wanted to surround her daughter, Luella, with bright vibrant colors. But she found only traditional pastels and products featuring licensed characters. She was looking for alternatives that would appeal to her own sense of design and that Luella would love and remember growing up with. Shelley saw the opportunity to create something new and much needed to the kids' market. Kideko's beddings and accessories are a conceptual part of the child's bedroom. With a unique combination of retro inspired prints in vibrant colors, it is an original and trendy way to style your kid's room. to view Kideko's collection > http://www.erayo.com/Kideko

Liliboom's concept is designing unique updated modern products with an additional value. All of Liliboom's products are designed to develop the child's imagination and expand his or her world. The colors, the textures and the organic shapes create a nostalgic, esthetic and interactive experience in different spaces at home: a blanket with pockets, beddings with soft figures and imaginative pillows. to view Liliboom collection > http://www.erayo.com/LILIBOOM

Luka wall graphics is another wonderful way to characterize a space - Luka is focusing on a solution that offers the freedom to express your personal taste and creativity. The surface graphics is a flexible way to redesign a child's bedroom and give him the feeling that it is all according to his choice and taste. Whether he likes airplanes, animals or flowers, the wall stickers can make the hall different. to view Luka collection > http://www.erayo.com/LUKA to view Pa Design collection > http://www.erayo.com/padesign

It's a Jewelry Jungle

July 24, 2008 06:13 by shelly

This trend has been "crawling" for some time now, from animal prints and silhouettes, to statement necklaces and cocktail rings, we now take the trend to a higher level - we let nature take its course.

visit Andrea corson and Adina Plastelina for more of this trend.

Many jewelry designers are demonstrating their love for the wild kingdom with killer pieces, meaning that the jewelry world is crawling with insects, reptiles, lizards and even horses. Not to mention the birds and the bees!

visit Tatty Devine and Petitaureau catalogue for more of this trend.

Weird or wonderful? It is sure to draw attention and make people react. Whether they like it or not, they will say something. While we are feeling all natural, there may be more to nature inspired jewelry? there are some superstitious beliefs that support this animal trend, some actually believe an animal piece can provide safety and good fortune. For example – snakes are known to represent loyalty and love.

New Addition - Tatty Devine

July 10, 2008 04:32 by shelly

Bling-bling, welcome exciting UK brand Tatty Devine!

London’s Tatty Devine is now in its 15th season giving the world, and now Erayo's retailers, its witty and imaginative jewelries:

Tatty Devine is famous for its unique and quirky accessories, which turn their jewellery items into art status through a winning combination of English eccentricity, jumble sale kitsch and traditional craftsmanship; Their designs can be distinguished amongst a big selection of jewellery with their special touch and smart chic ideas.

Hard to believe that the talented pair behind Tatty Devine, Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine, have no formal training as jewelers, though it may be what makes them so outstanding and exceptional. They met studying Fine Art at Chelsea School Of Art in 1996 and had planned to become artists, until one night Harriet found some bags of fabric samples on the way home from the pub. She made some leather cuffs that she and Rosie sold at London’s famous Portabello and Spitalfields markets, and lo and behold, Tatty Devine was born!

The fledgling label took off as Whistles and Harvey Nichols bought their cuffs and giant plastic gem cummerbunds. Interest from Browns Focus and Vogue magazine prompted the girls to launch their first official collection for Spring Summer 2001 at London Fashion Week. In 2003 they began showing at Paris Fashion Week too, and now have over 100 retail outlets worldwide.

They utilized found objects like Seventies cake decorations and their now-trademark guitar plectrums. Each season a new collection is launched whilst past pieces remain available as the “Best Of” that become the classic Tatty Devine. Among these classics are Dinosaur necklaces made from 70 separate Perspex ‘bones’; a fairytale horse and carriage cut out of mirror; wooden fawns and leather birdies; and oh so much more. Veterans of the quality press such as Vogue, Elle, Time Out and the Observer, continue to confirm that Tatty Devine is quite possibly the most inventive and exciting fashion accessory label in Britain today.

Packaging Design

June 26, 2008 03:31 by shelly
Once a product is ready to be sold to the end consumer, the designer and the boutique owner has one more thing to consider: the packaging. Packaging design is an entirely different design category nowadays; we can even say that in the last few years there are packages that rise above the product itself. Although the purpose of a package is to contain the item and protect it, people know that it is much more than that. It is the final boost in the shopping experience.

The primary job of the package is to attract the attention of the consumer by creating a visual experience before even touching the product. The next step is to create a desire to check it and finally purchase. Another very important aspect of designing the package is giving the consumer a second emotional experience while opening the package at home and reliving the excitement.

Even an inexpensive item can be sold in a respectful packaging full of thinking. It doesn’t have to be all gold and diamonds in order to be placed in an attractive box.

When studying design in college, professors always make sure students understand the importance of the product's package, it's all about the presentation: end customers appreciate a store and a designer that respects the products and thinks of all the details. "Packaging represents the virtues and appeal of the product.  It's one of the most important ingredients for brand identity and it must capture the feeling we want our clients to have while buying Luka products." Says Tamar Sela from Luka Wall Graphics.

Designer Gal Barash is originally an industrial designer which is shown through his all work process. While using mechanical dynamics to create his stylish jewelries, the package is as exciting as the jewelry itself: When a customer purchases one of Barash's jewelry, it is placed in an aluminum box while its cover is made of transparent glass. The box is filled with little colorful plastic pieces Gal gets from a plastic bag recycled factory. Those plastic bits are used for decoration and presentation in Gal's packaging but also for protecting the jewelry. The final touch is placing the box in an anti-synthetic bag that is originally used for electronic elements.

While packaging kids' products, there is a new trend allowing the parent / the kid to play with the item before even opening it - to feel it and crave for it. It’s a teaser, applying to all senses. There is special attention given to the quality of the material and the fabrics in regards to kids' products. Goga Design is specializing in soft products for kids and babies and they are aware and responsive to the need of the parents to feel it. While one can feel most of their designs presented in the stores, the products that are sold in a bag come with a fabric sample attached to the package - "Try before you buy".

When In Rome...

June 19, 2008 03:43 by shelly

We proudly present – NEO!

Hard to believe that the Neo brand is only two years old, since they have got a lot of attention in the global design scene: featured in design magazines, sold in museums around the world and exhibited in shows such as Maison Objet and the Summer Fair.

Neo is based in Rome, Italy, specializing in women's accessories, jewellery and home decoration. The three designers: Rosanna Contadini, Isabella Nardone and Analia Restrepo are making all of the products themselves in their intimate aesthetic studio where they also present the designs. Rosanna took us to a guiding tour in her studio presenting the items in her typical passionate manner.

"Neo" is short for Neoprene, the industrial material used for diving suits and equipment. Designers have shown a lot of interest in Neoprene in the last years, but Rosanna Contadini, with no doubt made quite an echo in that field. The main reason that makes the Neo products so surprising and popular is the contrast of combining such an industrial material, taken from entirely different association world, with the fashion industry, resulting in aesthetic, soft and trendy items.

The three designers use old traditional techniques and apply the new material to create jewellery, bags and objects such as bowls and cushions. The Neoprene threads are hand-knitted, twisted and woven together while emphasizing its advantages to create flexible, lightweight and silky smooth items.
